How Does Self-Healing Technology Work?

Self-healing is the most frequently asked-about feature of STEK PPF films. The mechanism works as follows: in the film's uppermost layer, there is an active polyurethane layer approximately 13-15 microns thick. When a fine scratch forms, the bond between molecules in the scratch area breaks. When heat energy (sunlight or warm water) is applied, the molecules reorganise, re-establishing the bond and levelling the surface.

This process works extremely efficiently in Ankara's sunny climate. In summer months, fine scratches that form in the morning on a parked vehicle can close by afternoon through solar exposure. In winter or in covered car parks, warm water application achieves the same effect.

Important note: self-healing only works for fine scratches on the film's own surface. For deep scratches or stone chip impacts that have reached the film surface, the film has acted as a physical barrier and protected the paintwork — but a mark may remain on the film. This does not mean the application has failed; on the contrary, it shows the film has fulfilled its purpose.

In the traditional method (cutting with a craft knife), the film is laid over the vehicle and cut by hand. In this method, the knife tip can easily contact the paint surface. Over time, film edges begin to lift from these micro-cut points, and the risk of paint damage increases during removal.
